Cheshire East Council has been slapped with a formal Government warning for failing to deliver best value. It’s one of the strongest interventions a local authority can face - and it exposes a council in chaos.
The Labour-Independent coalition at Cheshire East is now under scrutiny for financial mismanagement, weak leadership, poor governance, and a culture that resists change. This isn’t just about money - it’s about how the council is being run. The Government’s letter to the Council makes it clear: the failure lies at the top.
Some will try to blame funding pressures, but that won’t wash. This notice isn’t about central government - it’s about a council that can’t manage its own affairs, despite repeated warnings and mounting evidence of failure.
The result? Higher council tax, fewer services, and zero accountability. Residents are being asked to pay more while getting less. Roads go unrepaired, decisions are delayed, and local people are kept in the dark.
Enough is enough. We need clear leadership, a public improvement plan with real milestones, and a complete culture shift inside the council. Residents work hard and play fair - they deserve a council that does the same.
Until they’re ready to fix the finances, they’ve got no business raising your council tax.
