Sean Houlston has backed the Conservative Party’s new policy announcement to tackle tool theft and rural crime — a growing problem that continues to affect tradespeople, farmers, and small businesses across Cheshire.
The plan sets out a comprehensive package of measures to protect livelihoods, including:
- Mandatory marking of tools and equipment to make stolen items easier to trace and harder to sell
- A national register of power tools and farm machinery, helping police return stolen goods to their owners
- Expanding Rural Crime Units, such as Cheshire’s, with more dedicated officers and resources
- Tougher sentences for repeat offenders and organised gangs targeting rural areas
- Crackdowns on second-hand markets and online resale platforms where stolen tools are sold
- Improved security support and guidance for builders, tradespeople, and farmers
Sean said:
"I fully support the Conservatives’ plan to tackle tool theft and rural crime. Across Cheshire, I’ve spoken to builders who’ve lost their livelihoods overnight and farmers who have seen thousands of pounds of equipment stolen. These are hard-working people who deserve better protection and stronger enforcement."
He added:
"This policy is about standing up for the people who keep our economy moving — those who build, repair, and grow. Cheshire’s rural and small business communities should know that the Conservatives are on their side."
The Conservative proposals form part of a wider effort to improve rural security, support working people, and ensure that police forces like Cheshire Constabulary have the powers and resources they need to tackle crime effectively.
