Sean Houlston, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Runcorn and Helsby, has praised the community spirit and kindness at the heart of St Paul’s Church’s weekly Wednesday Welcome after recently joining for lunch with local residents.
The Wednesday Welcome offers a free, hot three-course lunch every Wednesday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at St Paul’s Church in Helsby. It provides a warm, welcoming space particularly for those who may be lonely or struggling to heat their homes, while fostering fellowship and conversation among residents of Helsby and the surrounding areas.
Loneliness remains one of the most pressing and often hidden challenges in our communities, particularly among older people who may face isolation due to bereavement, ill health, or limited mobility. Sean Houlston is deeply committed to tackling the scourge of loneliness, recognising that no one should feel forgotten or alone.
During his time as a trustee of a local hospice, Sean worked closely with the community to champion initiatives that brought people together – from befriending services to support groups – ensuring those at risk of isolation felt seen, heard, and supported.
Conservative Candidate for Runcorn and Helsby, Sean Houlston said:
“The Wednesday Welcome is more than just a warm meal. It’s a space filled with conversation, community spirit, and kindness. Initiatives like this show the very best of Helsby – people looking out for one another, lifting each other up, and sharing their time and compassion.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Revd Noel McGarrigle and the wonderful team of volunteers who make this happen week in, week out. It’s a powerful reminder of what makes our communities so strong.”
The Wednesday Welcome continues to be a vital part of local life, offering support and warmth to all who attend.
