Sean Houlston Delivers Keynote Speech on the Future of Construction

Sean Houlston, Head of Membership and Digital Services at the National Federation of Builders, delivered a keynote address at the Construction Industry Training Board Skills and Training Conference, outlining the transformative impact of artificial intelligence and digital skills on the construction sector.

Sean Houlston’s speech, titled The Future of Construction: Digital Skills and AI, provided insight into how AI, automation, and emerging technologies are reshaping the industry. He highlighted three key drivers influencing the sector’s future: sustainability, regulatory pressures, and technological advancements.

“Innovation is no longer optional; it is an essential strategy for success,” said Sean Houlston. “By 2030, we will see a construction landscape that is defined by smart cities, modular construction, and AI-driven decision-making. Companies that embrace these changes early will be the ones that thrive.”

Key themes of his speech included:

The Role of AI in Construction – From predictive analytics to robotics, AI is revolutionising project management, safety, and operational efficiency.

Essential Skills for Tomorrow – The workforce of the future must be equipped with digital proficiency, data analysis capabilities, and adaptability to evolving industry demands.

The Importance of Lifelong Learning – With construction methods changing rapidly, continuous professional development is critical for maintaining a skilled workforce.
